Man Cover Skills –He's got the needed quickness to run with anyone, but his footwork is frustrating and his lack of reactionary skills are even worse. Doesn't show great reaction as hands flash to the ball when his back is to the QB and his general lack of strength is problematic.
Zone Cover Skills –Loses some of his burst due to ineffective feet when dropping away from the LOS. Doesn't show good anticipation for a second route folding into his space and will get sucked out of position by the first thing to flash across his face.
Feet/Change of Direction –Feet are sloppy, particularly in his pedal. Not a fan of the false step he requires to come to balance before driving forward to challenge the football. When he's got it right or when on flat footed reads in off coverage, he's got excellent burst.
Ball Skills –Is typically late to react, especially when his eyes are down field and he's running with receiver. He tries to play through the hands of receivers in man but he doesn't accurately place the hands and will let receivers win contested targets.
Flexibility –Really natural mover in space and shows little issue with hip hinge to open and run when he's on an island vs. receivers pressing him vertically down the field. Has plenty of dynamic range to his base to reach out and catch his momentum when he's balanced.
Acceleration –Tremendous quickness. In instances in which he's implemented off ball and able to build up speed, he often takes blockers by surprise by how quick he gets to a spot. His long speed is excellent and would allow him to compete with anyone.
Zone Spacing –Has plenty of quickness and with further development could provide plenty of challenges to the football...but his footwork requires extra steps to collect himself and a lack of anticipation handcuffs him from consistently jumping routes.
Competitive Toughness –Soft. Ends way too many reps on the ground and can get pushed around in the run game or when trying to press against receivers on the boundary. Doesn't offer any kind of physical presence when he's trying to re-route.
Run Support –He's quick to step up in off coverage but his tackling leaves something to be desired. He's frustrating to watch in high traffic, as he gets bullied, pushed around and gets rocked in one on one situations when trying to uncover and rally to the football.
Tackling –Soft. Pretty timid in head up situations and will get ran over by bigger backs if he's caught in a bind trying to chop them down. He's much better in click and close to jump into the body of receivers, wrap and roll to finish without extra YAC.

Kendall Sheffield has some attractive qualities to his game, but he's got some significant concerns that will be difficult to reconcile if hoping to project him as a starter in the NFL. Sheffield has great quickness and the needed long speed to play on an island, but his footwork, physicality and ball skills are all lacking. That makes Sheffield more of a long term projection vs. a plug in prospect. His best fit may be as a nickel defender against smaller slots.
