PROS: Joe Bachie Jr's strengths play well against much of the Big Ten, where tight quarters and “pro style” offenses prevent Bachie from being isolated in space with too much frequency. Hits like a ton of bricks and has an impressive nose for the football, being in play on a multitude of turnovers in 2017. Effective strip tackler, showing good awareness to rip the ball while bringing ball carriers down the to ground. Has impressive mental maturity and quick decision making on run keys between the tackles, suddenly crashing down into a gap and addressing the ball carrier. Has a big, strong frame and is able to absorb contact from blockers and hold ground steadily.
CONS: Does not appear to have great functional athleticism, has some stiffness in the hips when attempting to gain depth off the line of scrimmage. Will struggle to come to balance and adjust forward burst when closing in on ball carriers in the backfield, doesn’t do a great job of finishing head up tackles under control. Has only modest lateral mobility and ability to stay in the hip of ball carriers to the outside.
