Analyst's Report

David Bailey Scouting Report

David Bailey is an edge rusher with a quick first step and natural instincts to get to the quarterback, which suggests he will be a productive NFL pass rusher.

Draft Grade: Round 1: Pro Bowl Caliber

Strengths:

Quick First Step: At the snap, Bailey has a quick first step that allows him to get around the edge and reach quarterbacks consistently.

Instincts Rushing the QB: Bailey has natural pass-rush instincts, finding different ways to get to the quarterback. His rush does not feel forced or manufactured, as he shows a natural understanding of how to beat offensive tackles and get to the quarterback.

Sack Production: Bailey finished toward the top of the FBS with 14.5 sacks, proving that he understands how to get to the quarterback and finish plays.

Counter Moves: Bailey’s athleticism allows him to change his pass-rush tracks. He can switch from an outside track to an inside counter to beat offensive tackles and vice versa. Bailey also has a spin move he can trigger, allowing him to redirect and win quickly.

Concerns:

High Pad Level: Bailey, at times, plays with a high pad level, which impacts his run defense. Blockers can win the leverage battle and control the rep, making it difficult for Bailey to shed blocks.

Run Defense: There are reps where Bailey loses in run defense, which appears to be due to overall strength limitations in holding the point of attack against offensive tackles on run plays.

Lack of Pure Power as a Pass Rusher: Bailey’s primary approach as a pass rusher is to win with pure speed. Throughout his career, there appears to be a lack of willingness to incorporate power into his rush. This could become an issue in the NFL, as offensive tackles will be more athletic, and he will need to utilize power rushes as a counter.
