Ty Simpson is a skilled quarterback whose traits of accuracy, mobility, and high IQ project him to have the potential to be a high-level starting quarterback in the NFL.

Draft Grade: Round 2 - Winning Starter

Strengths:

Accuracy: Simpson shows good overall accuracy, consistently delivering the ball to all three levels of the field. He is capable of making difficult throws such as opposite-hash outs and comebacks. Simpson is particularly effective attacking the middle of the field against zone coverage, throwing with anticipation, and fitting passes into tight windows.

Mobility: Simpson has deceptive athleticism that can be impactful within an offense. He can escape pressure in the pocket and is capable of tucking the ball and picking up significant yardage on read-option plays. While not an elite athlete, his mobility must be accounted for defensively if incorporated into the game plan.

IQ/Pre-Snap Identification: Simpson does a strong job identifying defensive coverages at the line of scrimmage. His pre-snap recognition allows him to play fast and decisively post-snap, operating with good timing and rhythm.

Concerns:

Arm Strength: Simpson’s arm strength is best described as good but not great. He is capable of making the necessary NFL throws, but his success is more dependent on timing and anticipation than pure velocity. When late with reads, he does not consistently have the high-end arm strength to compensate and still drive the ball into tight windows. On vertical throws, his velocity can taper off in the deeper portions of the field, requiring clean mechanics and proper sequencing to maximize distance and placement.

Limited Starts: Simpson enters the draft with only one year as a full-time starter at Alabama, which may be a concern for NFL teams that place a premium on extensive collegiate starting experience at the quarterback position. The limited game exposure could translate to a steeper learning curve at the next level, particularly in terms of processing speed and handling complex defensive looks.
