Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman previously announced his decision to remain with the Fighting Irish this season. Pro teams have not stopped pursuing him despite the contract adjustment he received at ND, according to the NFL Network. Freeman is viewed as a top-tier candidate around the league.
Freeman has compiled a record of 43-12 as the head coach at Notre Dame since 2021. The former NFL linebacker led the Fighting Irish to a National Championship appearance in 2024. This season, they were controversially left out of the College Football Playoff, leading to the program opting out of bowl game participation.
The 40-year-old Freeman is among football's most ascending coaches, in the college or professional ranks. Unsurprisingly, NFL teams maintain their interest in his services despite his initial commitment to remain at Notre Dame. We've identified three ideal fits for Freeman.
New York Giants
The New York Giants were one of the initial teams said to be doing their research on Freeman as a candidate. Since then, they've allegedly pivoted to a number of alternative options. Owner John Mara should reignite his interest in Freeman if there's any possibility of him weighing his options.
The Giants are reportedly all-in on John Harbaugh. They've also interviewed Mike McCarthy and Kevin Stefanski, among others. The Giants have arguably held the most impressive head coaching search of any team with an opening. If Freeman remains a realistic option, then general manager Joe Schoen should tempt him into a discussion.
Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons have a new setup after cleaning house and firing both general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris. Matt Ryan was named president of football operations and will possess full autonomy over the decision-making process. Ryan is now helping the Falcons hire the next general manager and coach.
Some of the Falcons' top initial options include Harbaugh, Klint Kubiak, and Anthony Weaver. Ryan would love to appoint a true culture builder, locker room leader, and team motivator. The Falcons have a good defensive coordinator in place in Jeff Ulbrich. If Freeman considers an NFL job, Atlanta would represent a quality potential landing spot.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens should rank atop every potential coach's wishlist. Their decision to fire Harbaugh was somewhat shocking, but as an organization, they are the definition of consistency and stability. Harbaugh was in charge for 18 years, winning a Super Bowl and qualifying for the postseason 12 times. Owner Steve Bisciotti has built a winning culture.
Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP winner. The roster is built to win right away, even in a competitive AFC North division. The Ravens rarely participate in the coaching carousel. Bisciotti would love to appoint a successor who can remain in Baltimore for 10-plus years. Freeman fits the bill.
