The Baltimore Ravens are placing the lowest restricted tender on backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, according to multiple reports. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta will retain the right to match any offer sheet Huntley signs, but the Ravens wouldn’t receive any draft-pick compensation in exchange for Huntley if they decide against matching a proposal. Huntley is essentially an intriguing name that just reached the backup quarterback market.
Huntley, who made the Pro Bowl in 2022, appeared in six contests for the Ravens, including their postseason defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals. Huntley completed 65.2% of his passing attempts while throwing for 884 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. A dual-threat quarterback, Huntley also rushed for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown in limited action. He’s a top-64 quarterback in the NFL.
We’ve identified three potential landing spots for Tyler Huntley via an offer sheet.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
Browns backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett officially departed the Browns on Wednesday, signing a one-year prove-it contract worth up to $10 million with the Washington Commanders. Brissett was signed by Browns general manager Andrew Berry last offseason as insurance for Deshaun Watson, who was facing a lengthy suspension. With Watson back in the fold, Brissett searched for another similar bridge-type situation around the league, and he found one in Washington. Brissett will compete for a starting job alongside Sam Howell.
Kellen Mond is currently the lone quarterback behind Watson on Cleveland’s roster. Mond hasn’t proven himself as a No. 2 quarterback since coming out of Texas A&M. The Browns are awfully familiar with Huntley, who led their division rival Ravens to a postseason berth in 2022.
GREEN BAY PACKERS
Aaron Rodgers confirmed his plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023 during Wednesday’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. The Packers and Jets are simply continuing to negotiate an appropriate trade package. Rodgers will soon join the Jets.
Rodgers’ eventual departure will usher in the Jordan Love era. Unless Zach Wilson is included in the Rodgers trade, which is unlikely, the only other quarterback under contract with the Packers is former seventh-round selection Danny Etling. Etling isn’t a capable backup quarterback. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst should officially be in the market for a backup quarterback. Huntley represents a viable option.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
The Philadelphia Eagles are going through an abundance of roster changes this offseason after losing in Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles have already parted ways with defensive standouts like Javon Hargrave and Darius Slay. Additional changes will arrive, including one at backup quarterback. Gardner Minshew is an unrestricted free agent and is currently searching for a more fruitful opportunity.
Signing an athletic quarterback to backup MVP candidate Jalen Hurts should appeal to general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni. Huntley’s skill set is more in line with Hurts’ than Minshew’s was. Huntley is a mobile signal-caller that could help keep Philadelphia‘s offense on schedule if Hurts were to miss time through injury.
