The Denver Broncos only made five selections during the 2023 NFL Draft. Equipped with such little draft capital, general manager George Paton agreed to terms with an astounding 17 undrafted free agents. It should lead to an extremely competitive training camp and preseason period in Denver.
The Broncos have had an undrafted rookie make their season-opening roster in 18 of the previous 19 seasons. Central Michigan EDGE Thomas Incoom possesses an excellent opportunity to keep that streak going. Incoom was one of my top-ranked undrafted free agents.
The Broncos showed immediate interest in Incoom’s services at the conclusion of the draft. Patton signed Incoom to a deal that included a $180,000 base salary guarantee, which ranked No. 1 among all undrafted free agents signed by Denver, according to multiple reports. Incoom’s $20,000 signing bonus was also tied for a team-high amount alongside Illinois offensive linemen Alex Palczewski. It signals how much interest Denver had in ensuring they landed Incoom’s signature.
Incoom previously played two years at NCAA Division II powerhouse Valdosta State, where he helped the program capture a national championship during his freshman season. In search of better competition, Incoom then transferred to Central Michigan for his final two seasons of college football. Incoom proved he could play alongside college football’s best athletes.
Incoom was outstanding throughout the 2022 college football season. Incoom exploded for 11.5 sacks, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 56 total tackles. Incoom’s efforts were rewarded with an invite to this year’s Senior Bowl. Incoom belonged alongside the top competitors in Mobile.
The 6-foot-2, 262-pound Incoom then put forth some impressive numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine. Incoom ran an 80th-percentile 4.66 in the 40-yard dash. Lower-body explosion was on display via Incoom’s 63rd-percentile 118-inch broad jump. Incoom also posted 23 reps on the bench press. Athletic comparisons include current and former NFL talents like Whitney Mercilus, Uchenna Nwosu, and Dawuane Smoot, per MockDraftable.
Incoom possesses natural gifts as a pass rusher. Incoom has a relentless motor when in pursuit of quarterbacks. Incoom fires off the snap with excellent anticipation, a clear rush plan, and urgent feet. Incoom has enough flexibility to threaten the outside shoulder of opposing offensive tackles. Incoom has flashed advanced technique with his hands. Incoom’s high football IQ allowed him to live around the football at both Valdosta State and Central Michigan.
“I’m all about that speed around the corner,” Incoom told The Draft Network in February. “I convert speed-to-power and I love the long-arm as well. I’ve started adding some finesse to my arsenal as well. I’m definitely a speed-to-power and speed-around-the-corner guy first and foremost, though.”
The Broncos have a clear top three at EDGE. Randy Gregory and Baron Browning are expected to start. Sophomore outside linebacker Nik Bonitto should receive the first crack at being Denver’s top rotational quarterback hunter despite his first-year struggles. All bets are off after that. Incoom should receive a fair opportunity to compete for a roster spot alongside the likes of Jonathon Cooper and Marcus Haynes.
Incoom can add quality depth behind Gregory and Browning, who are both unproven commodities. At worst, Incoom should land on Denver’s practice squad with the potential for a midseason call-up to the active squad. I have faith in Incoom’s ability to make Denver’s initial 53-man roster.
