Yasir Abdullah 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

  • 2021 team leader in sacks
  • Named to Second-Team All-ACC

  • Scheme tendencies: Stand-up edge rusher
  • 2022 projected role: Starting edge rusher

Pros: Yasir Abdullah’s best play comes from his quick first step. Against the run, Abdullah is able to beat offensive linemen to a spot because by using his quick first step to get into gaps and get penetration. When timed right, Abdullah can create backfield disruption and make a play in the offense’s backfield. As a pass rusher, Abdullah does a good job getting leverage on offensive linemen with his first step. Abdullah uses this quick first step to dictate the pace and beat offensive linemen around the edge. Abdullah is one of the better edge rushers in the ACC and it starts with how quickly he can gain ground on offensive linemen.

Cons: While Yasir Abdullah shows to be a high-level pass rusher, he needs to improve his effectiveness as a run defender. Abdullah struggles with reading and understanding blocks. This results in Abdullah taking himself out of position and opening up large run lanes for the offense. As a run defender, Abdullah is inconsistent in using his hands to defeat blocks and beat offensive linemen. Instead of maintaining gap integrity, Abdullah will spin out of blocks, which creates a hole in the defense. Abdullah is a high-level edge rusher, but in order to be a three-down player, he needs to continue to develop his play against the run.
