Tyreque Jones 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report
- Consensus three-star recruit
- Scheme tendencies: 4-2-5
- 2022 projected role: Starting safety/nickel defender
Pros: Tyreque Jones fits the mold for an around-the-box/low-hole safety—this is where he is best suited. He checks the physical measurements to play as a force defender in the run game. In addition, the tools match up in coverage versus tight ends. Jones possesses enough recovery speed to trigger from up high and close on the football underneath. He’s a reliable and secure tackler that brings an added punch. He operates well in man coverage out of the slot as a big nickel/dime defender. The multiplicity Jones offers should draw attention.
Cons: I love Tyreque Jones’ play style, demeanor, and willingness to trigger downhill as a run defender. That being said, a more calculated approach would benefit him. His aggressiveness will run him right into the angle of a climbing offensive lineman. He is not physically equipped to deconstruct blocks in the box. While Jones has the speed and range triggering down versus the run, I do not believe his range fits for a single-high safety in the NFL.
