Tyler Harrell 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Louisville transfer
  • Known for his blazing speed; was said to have run a 4.24 40-yard dash at Louisville pro day

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread / RPO
  • 2022 projected role: Starting QB

Pros: Tyler Harrell’s best asset is his speed. Harrell has already created buzz around his name heading into this season for his elite down-the-field speed. On film, Harrell has the acceleration and speed to effortlessly run past defenders to catch a deep pass. When he has free releases, Harrell does a good job of quickly eating up defenders’ cushions and leaving them in panic mode where by the time they flip their hips he is already even or running past them. Harrell’s speed is also evident after he catches the ball. Once Harrell catches the ball, he has the speed to simply run past defenders and outrun angles defenders may have on him. Harrell appears to be one of the fastest receivers in college football and should be a familiar dynamic to the Alabama offense, being comparable to speed guys they’ve had in the past like Henry Ruggs III.

Cons: Although Tyler Harrell appears to be able to dominate the game with his speed, there are other elements of his game that need to be improved for him to become a well-rounded receiver. The majority of Harrell’s routes are vertical routes like skinny posts and go routes, but he needs to develop the entire route tree to make himself less predictable and give himself a shot at becoming a true No. 1 receiver. As of now, Harrell appears to be a straight-line receiver that can dominate in this role but it makes him a niche player. I also didn’t see a lot of situations where he consistently caught the ball in traffic. I’m not saying that he can’t do it, but due to his style and what Louisville asked him to do, this is a question mark heading into this season.
