Prospect Summary
Tyler Baron 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Background:Â
- Brother played college football at Virginia Tech and is currently in the CFL
- Defensive Line MVP of The Opening RegionalÂ
System:Â
- Scheme tendencies: Multiple, 4-2-5Â
- 2022 projected role: Starting DE
Pros: Tyler Baron is a balanced defender that wins with power as a run defender and pass rusher. As a run defender, Baron plays with good leverage and extension to maximize his power, which enables him to set firm edges and squeeze gaps. He has good recognition skills and isn’t easily displaced from his run fits while dominating tight ends who are tasked with blocking him. When rushing the passer, Baron builds his rush off his ability to win with speed to power conversion while utilizing his length. Baron has proven to be highly effective with his inside moves and executing stunts. Tennessee deploys Baron from a two and three-point stance, providing him the opportunity to rush from a variety of alignments and stances.Â
Cons: Tyler Baron is a sufficient and fluid athlete but I wouldn’t call him overly dynamic or twitchy. He isn’t consistently explosive off the football and can be too interested in playing through blocks as opposed to working to the edges and cornering. Baron has room to develop his hand combatting skills to more consistently keep his pads clean and clear his pads when blockers fit their hands. Baron is a developing player that has only started a handful of games entering the 2022 season, so claiming a bigger role and making a bigger impact will help improve his valuation.
