Prospect Summary
Trey Dean III NFL Draft Scouting Report
SAF, Florida Gators
Trey Dean III is a senior defensive back who originally enrolled at the University of Florida as a cornerback. During the 2019 season, Dean began to make appearances at the safety position, proving his versatility as a defensive back. Dean finished his career at Florida with more than 250 tackles and four interceptions. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Dean has great size and athleticism to allow him to play multiple positions on the field and be a productive player. Throughout Dean’s career, he has played corner, both safety positions, and a rover/linebacker role. It appears that Dean’s best position is playing the strong safety position where he can easily insert on run fits while also being able to cover tight ends and running backs.Â
As a run defender, Dean does a plus-level job of being able to diagnose run plays and flow downhill. Dean has a quick trigger and closing speed to the ball carrier. When Dean can properly line up the ball carrier, Dean shows a physical temperament and will deliver a big hit to the ball carrier. Dean has a great tackling radius and his effectiveness allows for him to be a reliable insert defender on run fits. Â
In pass coverage, Dean’s past experience shows in his ability to showcase fluid hips and cover receivers man to man. Dean looks comfortable in space and has consistently been able to make plays on the ball. Dean also showcases the vertical speed to be able to run with receivers vertically up the field, effectively covering slot fades.Â
Dean’s concerns as a player come from inconsistencies in his play both against the run and in pass coverage. Against the run, Dean will be too eager to deliver the big hit and either overrun the ball carrier or whiff on a play.
