Taye Barber 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

  • Was third on the team in receptions (2021)
  • 2021 Honorable Mention All-Big-12

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Starting slot receiver

Pros: Taye Barber is a high-IQ player and it helps him in multiple phases of his game. As a route-runner, Barber does a good job of identifying man or zone and adjusting his routes based on the defense. Barber has also shown the ability to consistently find openings in the defense and make himself available to the quarterback. In this TCU offense, Barber appears to be a reliable target for the quarterback and shows to always be in sight of the quarterback. Barber’s skill set and understanding of how to work the middle of the field and maneuver through traffic to uncover is valuable. Overall, Barber is a consistently effective player that should find a role in the slot at the next level.

Cons: Taye Barber’s limitations as a player may come due to his overall speed. Barber shows to be a good athlete but there is a question of just how fast he is. Barber shows to have good burst and acceleration, but I don’t know if he has the game-changing speed that we’ve seen from other receivers that are shorter in stature. Barber has enough speed to get vertical on occasion, but he should be viewed more as a slot receiver that can work the middle of the field. Overall, it appears that Barber’s speed profile is closer to that of a traditional slot receiver than a slot receiver who would be categorized as having game-changing speed that the offense can run through.
