Tatum Bethune 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

  • UCF Transfer

  • Scheme tendencies: Scheme versatile
  • 2022 projected role: Starting inside linebacker

Pros: Tatum Bethune displays great instincts as an inside linebacker. At the snap, Bethune does a good job of diagnosing plays quickly to read run or pass and then trigger to his assignment. Against the run, Bethune does a good job of playing downhill and filling his gaps quickly. Playing the pass against play-action, Bethune does a good job of redirecting his eyes to find his responsibility and get to his assigned receiver. For Florida State, Bethune is a production player and most of that production is attributed to his instincts and his quick play recognition.

Cons: Tatum Bethune’s deficiencies as a player simply come from his limited physical and athletic profile. From a height perspective, it appears that Bethune is undersized for an inside linebacker and it affects him because sometimes he gets lost in the traffic and can’t find the ball carrier. Bethune also appears to lack true range as a player. Bethune is athletically sufficient playing inside the tackle box but when he is asked to play outside of that he struggles to get to ball carriers to make the tackle. In pass coverage as a zone defender, Bethune lacks range and it shows in his lack of ability to get depth in his drops. Overall, Bethune is a productive player that has very intriguing traits, but he needs to improve his athleticism to help elevate his draft stock.
