Roschon Johnson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

  • Initially enrolled as a quarterback

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Rotational RB

Pros: Roschon Johnson’s best attribute is his ability to be a receiver out of the backfield. In the Texas offense, Johnson is heavily relied upon in the passing game to become a target for quarterbacks in the passing game. Johnson shows to have good hands and catches most targets that come his way. As a route-runner, Johnson understands defenses and spacing, which allows him to uncover from defenders and make catches out of the backfield. Johnson appears to have the prototypical attributes of a third-down back and is a plus-level player in this role.

Cons: Roschon Johnson’s limitations as a player come from what appears to be an average athletic skill set. Johnson is a former quarterback that made the transition to running back. While he could be categorized as a plus-level athlete for a quarterback, as a running back, his athletic attributes appear to be average for the position. When Johnson is running the ball, there appears to be a lack of explosiveness to really threaten defenders in the open field. When making lateral cuts, Johnson lacks true short-area quickness to be categorized as an elusive back. Overall, Johnson is a productive back that appears to have a high IQ running the football, but he is limited by his average athletic traits.
