Ronnie Bell 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Two-sport athlete who averaged 15 ppg in basketball
  • Father coached wide receivers at Missouri Western State
  • Signed LOI with Missouri State for basketball before joining Michigan

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Open passing concepts with versatile alignments
  • 2022 projected role: Starting WR

Pros: Ronnie Bell is an explosive and versatile wide receiver. He aligns inside and out for the Wolverines’ offense. He benefits from pre-snap movement, ghost, jet, and orbit motions. He runs good routes from all alignment positions. I value him as a route salesman. His head fakes, eyes, and body movements manipulate defensive leverage. He possesses the speed to attack all three levels of the defense. He effectively uses his vertical ability to stress defensive backs to free space for underneath route options. He presents potential returner value too. Bell’s leaping ability and length create a plus-catch radius for his quarterback.

Cons: Ronnie Bell has not experienced a “breakout” season production-wise. Entering this final campaign coming off a season-ending knee injury, it would benefit Bell to add more tempo and variety to his route stems. He has some concentration drops on record, including the potential game-winner versus Penn State in 2019. Although he runs good routes, his route tree can expand to keep defenses off-balance. Becoming more sudden and sharp out of his breaks will help create more separation on in/out-breaking routes.
