In-play Film Analysis:

Malachi Moore has a versatile athletic skill set that allows him to play multiple positions within a secondary. At Alabama, Moore plays both safety positions as well as the nickel position. He’s able to make positive plays at all three positions as a run defender and in pass coverage.

As a run defender, Moore does a good job of quickly identifying his run keys and diagnosing run plays. From deep, Moore does a good job of closing to the ball-carrier and keeping himself in a good position to tackle. Moore is an effective tackler who understands angles and leverage and can bring bigger ball-carriers to the ground.

In pass coverage, Moore appears to be best in zone defense in the intermediate to short portion of the field where he can read the quarterback’s eyes and jump routes to make a PBU or an interception. Moore’s instincts and IQ are the best playing the field’s intermediate areas, and he seems to understand the different route combinations. In the deeper portions of the field, Moore has flashed good ball skills in how he has been able to track the deep ball and make a play on it when he is in position.

Moore’s concerns as a player come from what appears to be a lack of elite-level speed. This affects his ability to play man-to-man with elite-level receivers. This also shows in his ability to get back in phase with receivers in deeper portions of the field. While Moore is a good tackler, his size leans toward him being more of a coverage player with a possible move to corner or full-time nickel. But the speed deficiency makes him a role-specific player in coverage.
