Prospect Summary

Luke Wypler 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Part of state championship team in high school and earned All-State honors
  • Academic standout
  • Four-star recruit

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Zone rushing scheme, spread passing offense
  • 2022 projected role: Starting center

Pros: Luke Wypler is a polished technician. He operates under control, stays square, and competes to stay leveraged while fitting his hands. Demonstrating a clear understanding of angles, Wypler is effective in his pass sets to put himself in position to frame blocks while also winning in space. I love his ability to execute longer pulls and climb to the second level to connect with moving targets—that consistency is a testament to his athleticism and natural feel for angles as a blocker. While he isn’t overpowering at the point of attack, Wypler finds success as a positional blocker who holds his own against bigger nose tackles. Wypler has good lateral movement skills that enable him to hit cutoff blocks, take advantage of angles in zone, and pull. He is a standout pass blocker with good awareness and technique to find consistent success in maintaining the depth of the pocket.

Cons: Luke Wypler is a highly effective blocker but he lacks any true standout traits. While he has sufficient power, he has room to add functional strength to improve his ability to create displacement in the run game. He appears to have modest length, which creates challenges with keeping opponents out of his frame. I can see Wypler being labeled as a scheme-specific prospect that lacks positional flexibility, which ultimately would hurt his valuation.
