Pros: Ladd McConkey is a quick, versatile wide receiver with good speed. His track background is apparent with his quick short-area burst after the catch. McConkey shows a good understanding of coverages to locate vulnerable spaces within it. He uses this to win quickly as an underneath catch-and-run option for the quarterback. His athleticism is on display once the football is in his possession. On jet sweeps, McConkey displays the speed/quickness to force missed tackles and gain necessary yardage. I admire his toughness and willingness to work the middle of the field. Surprisingly, he flashed the ability to compete at the catch point with the ball at its highest point. He offers special teams value as a punt returner.
Cons: Ladd McConkey’s skill set seems as a better fit in the slot role for NFL offenses. He has not shown the ability to win outside vertically or versus tight man coverage. The majority of his routes are of the cross-field and in-breaking variety. Despite having the athleticism and burst, McConkey does not generate a ton of separation, putting more emphasis on needing a two-way go with alignment. His game is predicated on gaining yards after the catch in the quick passing game. At this moment, his ceiling is unknown as an NFL player.
