Prospect Summary
Josh Vann 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Background:Â
- Gamecocks Offensive MVP in 2021
- Academic Standout
- Named South Carlina’s Most Improved Player in Spring of 2019 for the offenseÂ
System:Â
- Scheme tendencies: Spread
- 2022 projected role: Starting WR
Pros: Josh Vann might be a late bloomer but I appreciate the production he was able to find in 2021 at South Carolina despite very challenging circumstances with the consistency at quarterback. He is positioned well to build upon 2021 with what should be vastly better quarterback play with Spencer Rattler now in the mix for the Gamecocks. After concerning issues with dropped passes early in his career at South Carolina, Vann cleaned up those issues in 2021. Vann made some impressive grabs on go balls in 2021 where he was able to stack vertically and showcase his ability to track the ball down the field.Â
Cons: Josh Vann isn’t an overly dynamic college receiver. He’s a monotone route-runner with ordinary separation quickness. He offers very little in terms of post-catch production and rarely survives any contact. Vann works overtime to beat contact as a route runner and he isn’t a consistent separator. While the improvement with his hands was notable in 2021, that needs to continue moving forward because his drop rate was alarming over his first three seasons at South Carolina. With Rattler at QB with more weapons around him, Vann needs to prove he is more than just an ordinary college receiver in 2022 to improve his valuation.
