Javion Cohen 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Selected to SEC All-Freshman team in 2020
  • Started 14 games in 2021 at LG

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Gap scheme and zone concepts
  • 2022 projected role: Starting LG

Pros: There are many things to like about Javion Cohen in that he appears to be a complete athlete, checking boxes for athleticism, strength, and IQ. Cohen’s strength shows up in both the run game and in pass protection. As a run blocker, he shows that he can sustain the line of scrimmage and even reset the line of scrimmage by moving defenders backward. In pass protection, his strength shows in that he can anchor on defenders and prevent them from collapsing the pocket. Cohen’s athleticism shows that he can effectively work to the second level under control to make effective blocks. Cohen’s IQ shows how good is at identifying twists and stunts and picking them up effectively. Cohen is a high-level player that I believe has all of the tools to finish as one of the top interior offensive linemen this upcoming year.

Cons: Javion Cohen does many things well, but the one part of his game that could use improvement is keeping his feet active. When engaging in blocks, Cohen will occasionally stop his feet upon contact. This issue prevents him from staying in front of defenders and maintaining blocks. Cohen appears to have the athleticism to stay engaged and keep his feet active so this seems to be more of an issue of a habit that I believe he can break. Lack of keeping his feet active also prevents Cohen from being considered a power run blocker because he doesn’t continue to generate power at the line of scrimmage to displace defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage. Cohen is an extremely gifted player and if can fix this small detail in his game he can easily make an argument to be one of the best offensive linemen in this draft class.
