Jalen Cropper NFL Draft Scouting Report
WR, Fresno State Bulldogs
Fresno State’s Jalen Cropper has been one of the most consistent and productive receivers in the country over the last three seasons. He has been a four-year contributor for the Bulldogs and really took his game to the next level as a junior and senior when he was able to catch passes from quarterback Jake Haener as together they formed one of the most lethal pass-catching combinations in the country.
Cropper has above-average height at 6 feet but a small, lean frame at just 176 pounds. He is an excellent overall athlete and has demonstrated outstanding playmaking skills as a receiver. Cropper primarily aligns in the slot for the Bulldogs and because of his lack of size and length, the slot will likely be his home in the NFL. He is an excellent route-runner showing excellent short-area quickness and change of direction to create separation at the top of the route. He is a highly instinctive player who has a very good feel for space and leverage both when setting up defenders with his routes and finding soft spots in zones.
Cropper is quicker than fast and he lacks the top-end gear to be able to consistently stress the defense over the top at the next level. With that said, he has outstanding ball skills and hands and has shown an ability to play the ball deep and win 50/50 situations. He shows an ability to run the full route tree but is best on quick-hitting routes where he can get the ball in his hands and go to work. He is outstanding as a runner showing excellent vision and elusiveness with the ball in his hands. A creative offensive coordinator would be wise to use him on quick screens, bubbles, and jet sweeps at the next level. Cropper also has the ability to return kicks and punts which will undoubtedly help him at the next level.
Overall, Cropper may lack top-end NFL traits, but his instincts, quickness, and ability to make plays with the ball in his hands will allow him to develop into a starting slot receiver in the NFL.
