Jack Campbell NFL Draft Scouting Report

LB, Iowa Hawkeyes

The 2022 Butkus Award winner, Jack Campbell delivered a highly-productive career for Iowa and is brimming with accolades, including consensus All-American honors during his final season while also being named a permanent team captain. He was Iowa’s defensive MVP in 2021 and 2022 and also received numerous honors for academics and coaches appreciation awards. In high school, Campbell lettered in football, basketball, and track.

In a world where linebackers are getting smaller, Campbell has a throwback frame that was engineered for serving as a downhill second-level defender in the NFL. I like how he leverages gaps and fits the run. He is physical when playing into the line of scrimmage and does well to stack and shed blocks while playing off contact. He processes the run game well and navigates congested areas to sniff out the ball carrier at a high level. Campbell is sufficient with shallow zone coverage drops and buzzing down in the flats—he holds his own as a hook/curl/flats defender in coverage. His coverage reps in 2022 were excellent, showcasing a strong understanding of spacing, squeezing routes, and eye discipline. When comparing my notes from studying 2021 to 2022, his feel in coverage significantly improved.  He has experience in all phases of special teams. Campbell is a mostly secure tackler with good hitting power. He takes good angles in pursuit and is rarely out of position while playing with good control.

Campbell is a sufficient athlete but doesn’t have top-end range. He isn’t likely to consistently perform well if tasked with carrying routes in man coverage. He’s a bit high-hipped, which takes away from his ability to flip his hips, transition, and change directions. Iowa gave him plenty of chances to blitz and shoot gaps but often lacked a plan to beat blocks.

Campell is a smart, instinctive, and physical linebacker with top-end intangibles that gives him the makeup of a starting MIKE at the next level, but there are some minor limitations to be mindful of.
