Prospect Summary
Dorian Thompson-Robinson NFL Draft Scouting Report
QB, UCLA Bruins
UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson is an experienced quarterback who has had plenty of success with the Bruins over his career. He is a five-year starter who has steadily improved over the course of his career. Thompson-Robinson has just average size for the position but is an outstanding athlete who makes plays with both his arm and his legs.
As a passer, Thompson-Robinson displays a compact and quick release. He surveys the field well and throws from a good base from his lower half up to his upper. Thompson-Robinson has excellent arm strength and velocity and shows the ability to drive the football into tight windows in all areas of the field. His accuracy is just average and his ball placement can be improved. He will have stretches where he throws the football well with timing and touch but too often will spray the football and miss high. His misses are largely due to his feet not being set properly when he delivers the football.
Thompson-Robinson has just average poise in the pocket and rather than staying calm and stepping up in the pocket when bullets are flying, he will become erratic and look to escape the pocket. Thompson-Robinson will oftentimes scramble and leave the pocket early rather than standing tall and stepping up to deliver an accurate pass down the field. Thompson-Robinson struggles to throw the ball outside the hashes and is often a tick late even though he does have the requisite velocity to get the job done. He takes a ton of sacks as he lacks the natural feel of when pressure is coming. His inconsistency to throw with touch and timing is frustrating as he does have flashes of doing so at a high level.
While there is work to be done as a passer, there is no denying Thompson-Robinson has a fascinating skill set that an NFL team may want to get their hands on. He is outstanding as a runner, showing outstanding speed, change of direction, and instincts which make him a threat whenever he decides to pull the ball down and take off. With the success other athletic quarterbacks who needed development as passers have had in recent seasons, Thompson-Robinson is more than worthy of a late-round flier—especially as he is an excellent leader and his football character is off the charts.
