In-play Film Analysis:
DJ Uiagalelei is a physically-imposing QB prospect. He has used that big body to his advantage in the run game. Clemson dialed up QB read, QB power, and keepers for Uiagalelei to get going downhill. He can handle the task of running downhill between the tackles. Uiagalelei possesses surprisingly quick feet to force missed tackles at the second level of the defense.
His arm strength is among the best in college football. Uiagalelei can rip passes into tight windows and launch throws into the deep areas of the field. When he is on schedule, Uiagalelei can place the ball on target with touch and accuracy. He works best on quick-passing concepts like RPOs, allowing Uiagalelei to deliver quick, on-time passes and removing the need to hold onto the football.
Uiagalelei’s issues revolve around decision-making and mechanics. His motion is a full wind-up. The combination of his static base/footwork and elongated stride decreases accuracy/ball placement. He tends to throw with unsettled or erratic feet in the pocket. He gets up on his toes and alters how accurate passes are delivered. Uiagalelei has lacked the consistency needed to take the next step based on his physical tools and traits.
2023 will be big for Uiagalelei’s draft stock. In an offense most feel fits his skill set better, he has to play up to his skill set and God-given tools to provide hope to an NFL franchise in regards to his projection.
