Derick Hall NFL Draft Scouting Report
EDGE, Auburn Tigers
Derick Hall was a consensus four-star recruit and a top-10 player in the state of Mississippi. Hall was a multi-sport high school athlete—football, basketball, and track—and was a state-finalist 200-meter sprinter. Hall enrolled at Auburn in January 2019 and has developed into a force off the edge for the Tigers’ defense. In four seasons, Hall has accounted for 84 pressures, 27 QB hits, and 22 sacks. He has carved out a productive college career. Hall was selected as a team captain for the 2022 season.Â
Hall is an explosive pass rusher with a dense/strong build and long limbs. He should not be boxed in as a pass rusher that only holds value on third downs. Hall is a strong edge setter and run defender. His understanding of leverage paired with the usage of his reach and power allows him to hold up at the point of attack. His hands are heavy and powerful and he is a difficult blocking assignment for tight ends. As a pass rusher, Hall’s A-trait is his ability to convert speed to power. He uses that explosive burst to sell the outside track before using the long-arm and half-man technique to drive blockers into the backfield. He has shown a little bend to dip underneath offensive tackles’ hands to quickly impact the quarterback.Â
Despite Hall’s athleticism and power, there are missing components to his game at this time. He is underdeveloped as a pass rusher regarding his rush plan and hand-to-hand combat skills. A big part is due to the coaching staff dropping him into coverage more than needed. It did showcase his athletic ability but it has slowed Hall’s development over time. He is not the most bendy or flexible rusher. Do not expect him to turn the corner like Von Miller or even Myles Garrett. His rush package consists of speed and power with much room for improvement.
If your team selects Hall, you will be receiving a leader on the field and in the locker room. Hall’s upside as a pass rusher is exciting paired with his physical and athletic traits. He plays with a high motor/drive and energy. Execute patience early on as he continues to work on his game from a technical standpoint. He will bring physicality to your run defense combined with his explosive pass-rush presence. He has the traits to develop into a long-term starting EDGE/OLB at the next level.
