Prospect Summary
DeMarvion Overshown NFL Draft Scouting Report
LB, Texas Longhorns
DeMarvion Overshown is a fifth-year senior linebacker who was originally recruited to the University of Texas as a physical safety. After minimal snaps at safety early in his career, Overshown made the transition from playing safety to playing the linebacker position, making him a versatile three-level defender. Overshown should be one of the more physically impressive draft prospects pound-for-pound in this year’s class. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Overshown has the size, speed, and athleticism that gave him the potential to be an impactful defensive player at the next level and the versatility to align in multiple positions on the field.Â
Against the run, Overshown showcases excellent sideline-to-sideline speed and consistently tracks ball carriers down and makes the tackle. On arrival, Overshown tackles with a violent temperament and will accelerate into the ball carrier, making for a violent collision. When Overshown triggers downhill, he has the speed to beat offensive linemen to a spot and make the tackle. When he is on the backside of the play, Overshown can burst through the line of scrimmage and track the ball carrier down.Â
Against the pass, Overshown’s experience playing defensive back shows. Overshown has the ability to flip his hips and get great depth in his zone drops and can make plays on the football. In man coverage, Overshown’s length and size have great value in that he can match up well with big tight ends and has the athleticism to match with some slot receivers.
As impressive of an athletic profile as Overshown has, there are still parts of his game he needs to improve. Against the run, Overshown appears to be slow to key and diagnose run plays. This makes him easily blockable at times. Once blocked, Overshown lacks the true size and strength to quickly shed offensive linemen to free himself to make the tackle on the ball carrier.Â
Overall, Overshown’s athletic profile of size and speed will make him one of the most intriguing defensive prospects in this draft. It appears that Overshown’s effectiveness at the next level will be based on teams capitalizing on his versatility and aligning him in positions where he can use his size and athleticism to make plays instead of placing him only in traditional linebacker alignments.
