Cameron Young enrolled at Mississippi State University in 2018 as a three-star defensive tackle recruit. Young predominately aligns as a 0 or 1-technique defensive tackle, in the A and B gaps on the defensive line. He plays with a strong base to anchor versus the run and maintain his positioning. Young has promising arm length/reach to stack and shed blocks effectively. In addition, he plays with good hand strength to deliver respectable punches to the chest of opposing blockers. The combination of his punch power and arm length allows him to walk blockers backward to reset the line of scrimmage. 

There are glimpses of functional lateral agility when he is asked to loop around on twists and stunts. Young should not be confused with an explosive athlete. He plays in a 3-3-5 defense and is asked to play as a two-gap defender. He does not offer or generate a strong burst at the snap. His hand counters leave a lot to be desired. Young does not have refined punches or counters to quickly deconstruct blocks. If offensive linemen are quicker to the draw and get their hands fitted first, Young is susceptible to being stuck on the block. I expect him to be a rotational two-down defensive tackle versus the run.
