Cameron Latu 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Broke the Alabama single-season TD record for tight ends (8)
  • Former defensive end converted to tight end

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Plays in a spread system
  • 2022 projected role: Traditional in-line TE

Pros: Cameron Latu emerged this past year as a well-rounded tight end for the Crimson Tide offense. At Alabama, they ask Latu to block and he proves to be effective most times in attempting to sustain his blocks. They will also align him at fullback and the H-back position and allow him to serve as the lead blocker on run plays. Latu is also an effective route-runner in how he manages to uncover on underneath routes. Latu seems to be a high-IQ player that understands zones and will find the vacant spots to get open. Latu becoming the starter last year was a bit of a shock but he showed signs of being an effective player and I look forward to him continuing to develop his skills this year.

Cons: Cameron Latu’s deficiencies as a player simply come from his lack of natural speed. Latu lacks the speed to be a vertical threat making him primarily an underneath option for the quarterback. This lack of speed also shows in his inability to separate from defenders after he catches the ball. Latu has to turn into more of a physical runner after the football because he doesn’t have the natural speed to run away from defenders. Latu is a good football player but will be best if he is paired up with tight ends and receivers who can stretch the field vertically to offset his speed deficiencies and keep the offense balanced.
