Alex Austin 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention (2021)
  • Standout Sprinter in high school

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Man coverage principles
  • 2022 projected role: Outside corner with man-to-man cover skills

Pros: Alex Austin has been a productive player for the Beavers for the last two seasons and it appears he has taken his game to the next level. Austin is a long corner with very good size and athleticism. He aligns predominantly outside and has the size and athleticism to match with the opposing teams’ No. 1 receiver. He flashes excellent patience at the line and displays outstanding instincts and route-recognition ability. He has very good short-area quickness that he uses to close on the football. A long corner, Austin is able to close the gap between himself and the receiver while also still running with a smooth pace that allows him to make plays on the football. He is a tough and physical corner who excels in the run game.

Cons: Alex Austin is a bit tight in his lower half and his transitions are labored at times. He is raw with his technique in press and misses with his hands, which allows receivers to get off the with line ease. Austin will take unnecessary risks at times attempting to make a play and he will get beaten deep by these risks. In man coverage, Austin is susceptible to double moves and misdirection and he is too focused on the quarterback’s eyes.
