A legendary Colts receiver could get a second act in the coaching world on Indianapolis’ retooled staff.
Colts head coach Frank Reich has been tasked with retooling a large part of his staff thanks to the departure of former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, now the head coach of the Chicago Bears. The Colts are bringing in Gus Bradley and with him, Reich said he’s looking forward to a fresh start for the defense and the shift that could happen under Bradley.
And while that has rightfully taken up a lot of the speculation when it comes to Indianapolis’ staff, there is also one major potential shakeup on offense: the addition of former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne.
Indianapolis wide receivers coach Mike Groh departed for the same position with the New York Giants and Reich personally is advocating for his position to be filled by none other than Wayne.
“I've been talking to Reggie about possibly getting on staff for four years,” said Reich. “I mean, Reggie is a guy who I have the utmost respect for. I'm just a big believer in him as a person and as a competitor, as a winner. And so if we can get that all locked up, I think it'll be a big deal. I'm excited about the prospect that we take that final step with someone like Reggie. I think he’ll bring a lot not only to the individual receivers there about how to play the position, but also just the mentality, that championship mentality that we want to have to go forward.”
Wayne won Super Bowl XLI with the Colts, alongside buddy Peyton Manning, and had a 14-year playing career, all with Indianapolis. He knows the ins and outs of the organization, even if he’s a newbie to this coaching thing.
“It is a big step,” said Reich. “There's a lot to learn and he knows that, but he's a guy who is willing to put in the work. I know that he knows that. We’ll support him.”
Reich went on to say the finer points of coaching are things that can be taught but essentially Wayne brings an intangible to the team that could be used to help develop their young playmakers.
“He has an upside into what he can bring to our team and that's what you bet on.”
