PROS: Rodney Smith is most effective as a one cut runner to stick his foot in the ground and break up the field. Has decisiveness to cuts and as a result will rarely get caught stringing plays to the boundary. Shows impressive balance, offering the ability to pinball off of a body blow and (provided there is additional room to maneuver) will recollect base and then flip up the field for more yardage. Has provided an outside rushing threat on jet action out of the backfield and again uses hard cut to break against defensive flow to get up the field. Tasked with notable reps as a pass protector and stands in firm against second level defenders to buy time, has likable aggression on such reps.
CONS: Doesn’t have a lot of explosiveness to running style, instead is a smooth runner. Lacking in the burst and long speed to defeat angles on the second level. Runs tough but if unable to contort off of contact will get stuck on defenders and lose leg drive and forward momentum in search for extra yardage. Isn’t a grinder and success plugging into tight spaces does not yield a lot of extra production. Will need to have perfected the finer points of the game on account of what appears to be modest physical attributes relative to his colleagues.
