PROS: Powerful, compact frame without a lot of bad weight. Solid pad level. Strength and power as a bull rusher to drive blockers into the pocket or push-pull them off his frame. Can hold his ground against doubles with good technique and recognition. Good first step to challenge offensive linemen out of their stance. Varies his pace and has the suddenness to burst into an attack as a rusher. Hands are quick and violent, showing a lot of potential for him as a pass rusher. Respected leader in the locker room.
CONS: Slower to recognize zone schemes and got scooped vs Notre Dame. Often battles to stalemates because of a lack of creativity as a pass rusher. Runs out of steam at times. Played banged up a bit last year which could have impacted his energy level. Not the most flexible or laterally agile defensive tackle. Stiff in the hips and doesn’t have the range to make a lot of plays horizontally or deep in the backfield. First step is good, not great.
