PROS: Dropped 40 pounds and currently boasts one of the best frames of any defensive lineman in college football. Overall physical profile is rare, long, rocked-up arms and legit abs despite being 305 pounds. Dramatic body transformation and commitment to the weight room/strong eating habits have many believing Kinlaw is just scratching the surface of what he can be.
Unbelievable get-off, especially when you consider his size. Explosive and will carry that speed up the field in his attacks. Length and power are completely overwhelming at times. When his pad level is right and his feet are underneath him, can roll through an offensive lineman with ease. Flashes a sudden and decisive swim move to win on the edge of his opponent.
Brute strength to stack and shed blocks. Places his hands well and can control blockers with his length and punch even when he plays a little high. Recognizing blocks far better this season and will fight playside to keep from getting reached. Massive tackle radius to bring down runners outside his frame. Plays hard and physical all the time, non-stop motor.
CONS: Still pretty raw in his overall technique. Will get overextended and dropped by more technically savvy opponents. Leans into contact and can throw himself off-balance with frenetic movements, failing to accomplish a specific purpose. Pad level is inconsistent, against double teams will often get knocked off the ball. NFL teams won't like the handful of plays he's on the ground every game. Definitely a high-variance player right now.
Pass rush plan is still incomplete, will get stuck if his first move (typically a bull rush) is stymied. Try as he might, can only reduce his surface area so much and will get re-directed by the pocket if an offensive lineman can match his quickness. Mental processing is still coming along. Will need to learn to recognize certain blocking schemes more rapidly, especially double teams.
Consistency in all aspects of his game, especially hand usage and get-off, will need to improve. The peak plays/performances are amazing, but against tougher competition he got chest-to-chest a little too often and occasionally fell asleep at the wheel and was late off the ball.
