PROS: Excellent athlete for the position. Has the physical profile of an NFL starter. Great quicks come into play as a climber--generates great angles on zone flow and can tag and sustain with linebackers in space; reaches as well. Can get depth into pass set with active feet and strong lower half. Uses length well early in his reps and can shock and sustain with his punch. Grip strength is not elite but it's there. Best pass protection reps come as the aggressor on vertical sets. Has recovery body control and explosiveness to steer rushers beyond the quarterback. Will re-work his hands and angles during reps and has the hip flexibility to coil and displace. Protects the B-gap rush lane very well and is heady on twists.
CONS: Kick-slide technique and understanding need an overhaul. Gets far too trigger-happy in his kick-slide and will surrender balance, timing, and location in a full bore effort to land a punch. Good rushers will feint into his cylinder to draw out hands, then slip right by him. Leaning on contact and on punch alike both major concerns. Rushers can dodge him with inside counters, especially spin move, and quick outside cross chops. Lean on contact in running and passing game alike will lose him reps he initially won. Leaning not necessarily indicative of poor flexibility--rather, bad form. Inability to recognize rush plans early in reps leaves him in a panic/lean place of vulnerability. Will lose to the bull rush given divorce between upper and lower half. Profile is there, but he's a project at this current stage of his technical development.
