The New York Jets will collide with the Buffalo Bills in Week 10 for a notable AFC East divisional battle. The Jets are looking to bounce back from Thursday's primetime loss at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, and the Bills are looking to redeem themselves following Sunday's humiliating loss to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. Jets head coach Robert Saleh made a significant announcement on Wednesday afternoon when he informed reporters that quarterback Mike White will start against Buffalo on Sunday.
White has seemingly healed from a right forearm injury that knocked him out of last week's contest. The Jets faithful were hoping to see rookie quarterback Zach Wilson recover from injury in time to take the field against the Bills, but Saleh has squashed that possibility, claiming that the team won't rush Wilson back and risk a setback. It is the right decision for a team that should continue to prioritize Wilson's health and future availability down the stretch of the 2021 campaign.
Wilson understandably needs reps in order to develop his raw skill set but they shouldn't come at the price of his long-term outlook from a health perspective. Saleh has made the right decision by choosing to approach the situation in a cautious manner. Wilson is dealing with a knee injury he suffered in a Week 7 blowout against the New England Patriots and was immediately expected to miss several weeks. Sunday will mark the third consecutive contest on the sidelines for Wilson.
White will once again take the reins against Buffalo, and the former fifth-round selection out of Western Kentucky has quickly endeared himself to New York’s boisterous fan base. The Florida native shocked the football world by leading the Jets to an enthralling Week 8 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. White completed an astounding 37-of-45 passing attempts in that contest for 405 yards and three touchdowns. He has proven himself plenty capable of helping the Jets win a football game.
Despite the abundance of both local and national attention White has deservingly captured for his inspiring performances in recent weeks, Wilson is the face of the franchise, and the direction of New York's future relies on his continued development. Wilson was beginning to show signs of encouraging progress before suffering his unfortunate injury, and the Jets' front office brass is undoubtedly excited to see their No. 2 overall pick take the field again sooner rather than later. Saleh has made a difficult but correct decision, one that should ensure the future remains beyond bright for Wilson. The former BYU quarterback will return at some point in 2021 and Jets fans should simply sit and wait patiently for him to fully recover from his current ailment.
