3 Teams That Should Trade For Jalen Ramsey

The Los Angeles Rams could consider trading veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey this offseason, according to reports. Ramsey is set to earn a base salary of $17 million while carrying a sizable cap charge of $25.2 million, per Spotrac. The Rams could save $17 million against the cap by designating Ramsey as a post-June-1st trade.

Those are sizable savings for a franchise that’s entering the summer approximately $15 million above the 2023 cap. The Rams possess an aging roster that’s in limbo. A six-time Pro Bowler, Ramsey’s services would be in high demand. We’ve identified three potential landing spots for Jalen Ramsey.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

The Raiders now possess $46.3 million in cap space after releasing veteran quarterback Derek Carr earlier this week. Only the Chicago Bears ($97.7 million) and Atlanta Falcons ($56.5 million) have more financial flexibility. The Raiders must acquire a new starting quarterback, but a popular target like Jimmy Garoppolo would be affordable while allowing them to continue spending money elsewhere.

Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels aren’t allergic to making a big splash. They completed a blockbuster deal for Davante Adams last summer. The Raiders’ 29th-ranked passing defense allowed 242.9 yards through the air per contest in 2022. Playing in the AFC West alongside the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and now the tandem of Russell Wilson and Sean Payton means the Raiders require better cornerback play. Ramsey could be destined for Vegas.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Bill Belichick has always appreciated a commanding physical presence on the boundary. The Patriots lacked a shutdown cornerback in 2022 and could look to rectify the issue this offseason. After a difficult summer against the salary cap, the Patriots now possess $38.3 million in available money. Expect Belichick to be aggressive as he attempts to restore the Patriots to AFC East relevancy.

New England’s top defensive priority must be to stop the pass. Playing against Josh Allen and the pass-happy Buffalo Bills twice per year often helps determine the division title. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel also unlocked Tua Tagovailoa this season, and the New York Jets will acquire a veteran quarterback this summer, with Aaron Rodgers apparently leading the charge. Ramsey could help the Patriots counteract their common opponents.

DETROIT LIONS

The Lions and Rams have a terrific working relationship through Lions general manager Brad Holmes. Holmes spent a whopping 18 seasons (2003-20) in the Rams’ front office, working his way up from scouting assistant to the director of college scouting. Holmes immediately traded ex-Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams. The Rams may be hesitant to trade Ramsey within the conference, but the existing bond between the two clubs could help kickstart negotiations for Ramsey.

The Lions allowed a 30th-ranked 245.8 passing yards per contest in 2022. Jeff Okudah didn’t develop into the shutdown cornerback the Lions hoped he’d be and Amani Oruwariye is an unrestricted free agent. Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn lacks the necessary talent at cornerback to run his preferred scheme to perfection. The Lions could address that by trading for Ramsey.
