Jack Coan only spent one season of his career at Notre Dame and the decision to bring the transfer on board ultimately paid off for the Fighting Irish, despite the highs and lows. The season couldn’t have ended on much higher of a note statistically for Coan as he gave Notre Dame everything he had in the 37-35 loss to the No. 9-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Fiesta Bowl. Coan completed 36-of-68 passes for 509 yards with five touchdown passes and just one interception—it’s hard to ask for much more than that. That performance broke a Notre Dame bowl record for total yards, previously set by Jimmy Clausen, who had 401 yards in the Hawaii Bowl back in 2008. Coan finished the season with a completion percentage of 65.7% with 3,150 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and seven interceptions after spending three seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers. That brought his career completion percentage to 66.9% with 6,428 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. The quarterback had a solid second half of the season despite leading an offense that could hardly ever get its run game going, something that he wasn’t to blame for but did negatively impact him and make him look worse. Even though he elevated the Fighting Irish’s offense, Coan has not generated nearly as much attention as some of the other quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft class and is currently expected to be a priority UDFA. He’s got a chance to continue improving his draft stock, though, as he’s one of the quarterbacks selected to play in this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl. This is a good opportunity for him to showcase his big-play ability, considering that one of the things working against him is the fact he’s seen as more of a game-manager—a conservative quarterback who can be efficient but doesn’t receive much praise beyond that point.
