The 2022 college football campaign is beginning to approach its conclusion and the Heisman Trophy landscape is beginning to come into focus. The results of each passing Saturday are increasingly gaining influence. Securing positive results is of the utmost importance for Heisman hopefuls to reign victorious ahead of their competitors.

Legitimate Heisman contenders have begun separating themselves. The 2022 campaign is entering a crucial period. BetOnline recently updated their exciting Heisman odds. The top favorites shake out as follows:

  • C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State (+225)
  • Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee (+325)
  • Caleb Williams, QB, USC (+400)
  • Blake Corum, RB, Michigan (+550)
  • Bo Nix, QB, Oregon (+900)
  • Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia (+1200)
  • Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina (+1200)
  • Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU (+1600)
  • Bryce Young, QB, Alabama (+4000)
  • Max Duggan, QB, TCU (+4000)

THE FAVORITE AND MY PICK: C.J. STROUD, QB, OHIO STATE

The fourth-place finisher in 2021, Ohio State starting quarterback C.J. Stroud appears primed to right last year’s defeat. Stroud has been electric while leading his Buckeyes to nine consecutive victories and a perfect record. Stroud has completed 67.9% of his passing attempts en route to totaling 2,453 passing yards, 29 touchdown passes, and just four interceptions.

The No. 6 overall player in our latest TDN100 update, Stroud is overseeing an efficient offense that’s scoring 45.8 points per contest. Stroud has built terrific chemistry alongside go-to targets such as Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. Stroud and Ohio State’s offense can go toe-to-toe with any program in the nation.

The No. 2 overall program in the selection committee’s current CFP rankings, Stroud and the Buckeyes appear primed for a postseason berth. In-house scout Damian Parson sent Stroud to the Carolina Panthers in our latest NFL mock draft. Stroud is the rightful favorite to capture the 2022 Heisman award.

THE NO. 1 CONTENDER: HENDON HOOKER, QB, TENNESSEE

Arguably the most heartwarming story of the 2022 campaign, Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker had been capturing legitimate momentum to win this year’s Heisman honor. That is until Hooker and the Volunteers ran into the Georgia Bulldogs this past weekend. The Vols suffered their first defeat of the season, and Hooker completed just 23-of-33 passing attempts for 195 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception.

Typically a dual-threat quarterback, Hooker also averaged less than one yard per carry (17 yards on 18 attempts). Georgia’s swarming defense, which features the likes of Jalen Carter and Kelee Ringo, didn’t afford Hooker any room to operate. Hooker’s lackluster performance against the best defense in the nation has negatively impacted his Heisman odds.

Hooker will receive future opportunities to right Saturday’s wrong. Hooker has enjoyed a terrific campaign under the tutelage of brilliant head coach Josh Heupel. Don’t throw in the towel on Hooker.

DON’T SLEEP ON: BLAKE CORUM, RB, MICHIGAN

Running backs have to achieve something truly special in order to catapult themselves to victory ahead of high-producing quarterbacks. Michigan running back Blake Corum is a dark horse that’s capable of achieving the unthinkable. Corum ranks fourth in the nation in rushing yards (1,187) and first in touchdowns (16) among all ball carriers.

Michigan’s run-heavy offense centers around Corum, who has become the Wolverines’ go-to running back following Hassan Haskins‘ departure to the NFL. The 9-0, potentially playoff-bound Wolverines are averaging 250 rushing yards per contest. After failing to reach the 100-yard mark in his first three appearances of the season, Corum has rushed for 109 or more yards (including a 243-yard showing) in six consecutive contests. Corum has scored at least one touchdown in every game this season.
