The preseason is over. Kaput. New this year is an extended break between the end of the preseason and the start of the regular season, which just gives us more time to set our Week 1 lineups for optimum production. The key to finding that lineup sweet spot in any salary cap tournament is identifying value plays at every position that allows you to save your bankroll to splurge on stars.
While many will choose to pay the price to roster a top quarterback, OwnersBox’s SuperFlex format forces fantasy players to be a bit more strategic. Since you’ll likely want to play two quarterbacks (one in the QB spot, and one in SFLEX) most weeks, you’ll need to pinch pennies somewhere. Let us help.
Here are three value plays at the quarterback position that you can start either at QB or SFLEX as you build your Week 1 lineups. If you haven’t signed up yet, playing on OwnersBox is simple! Tyrod Taylor (QB - HOU)
$5300 vs. JAX
My favorite value play of the opening week slate, Taylor is being completely slept on right now because, well, he’s Tyrod Taylor—the Deshaun Watson uncertainty is obviously a major factor as well. However, Taylor has proven in the past that he can provide solid fantasy value when he gets the opportunity to start.
Looking all the way back to his days in Buffalo, starting in 2015, Taylor has averaged 17.54 fantasy points per game as a starter in OwnersBox scoring. While that won’t send you out of your seat jumping for joy every week, that’s a pretty solid baseline for a player with only the 31st-highest QB price right now.
For the salary-cap cost of a high-end WR3 or RB3, you can play Taylor in your SFLEX spot against a Jaguars defense that allowed the third-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks last season. Given how weak both Houston and Jacksonville’s defenses are, there are plenty of fantasy points to be had in that matchup.
Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB - WSH)
$5700 vs. LAC
Ranking just outside of the top 20 quarterbacks in price, why not add a little FitzMagic to your Week 1 lineup? He’ll have plenty of weapons to work with—Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic, etc.—and isn’t afraid to sling the ball all around the yard.
While the Chargers aren’t a phenomenal matchup, they’re not one to avoid either. Los Angeles’ defense allowed the 10th-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks last season and will be traveling from the west coast to the eastern time zone for an early kick-off—I can see Washington jumping on them early. Plus, in his seven starts last year for Miami, Fitzpatrick averaged 21.01 fantasy points per game in OwnersBox scoring.
Trey Lance/Jimmy Garoppolo (QBs - SF)
$6000/$5700 @ DET
You’ll have to wait to see who Kyle Shanahan names as his Week 1 starter, but sign me up for any quarterback playing against the Lions. Detroit allowed the second-most fantasy points per game to passers last season, just a fraction of a point away from being the worst defense in the NFL against fantasy QBs. Their defensive unit is still in flux this season as they look to transition out of the Matt Patricia era.
The 49ers will lean heavily on their run game, but there will be plenty of production to go around for whichever quarterback starts this game. Fantasy players would prefer Lance and his rushing upside, but Garoppolo would be a solid option as well.
This may be the classic case of strictly playing the great matchup, but it’s a tried and true formula for a reason.
