Just when you thought the Detroit Lions’ 0-7 season couldn’t get any worse… it did. Detroit’s 44-6 shellacking by the Philadelphia Eagles was a stark reminder that the Lions aren’t a few plays away from a couple of wins in 2021. Instead, they’ve found ways to lose because, let’s face it, they’re a terrible team.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has been good for some quality soundbites this season, if nothing else. He’s gone on record about wanting players with an appetite for kneecaps—a real man’s man—while also showing his softer side when sobbing after Detroit’s last-second loss to the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks back. After Sunday’s humiliation, Campbell provided an honest assessment of himself.

“Look, I got outcoached, man,” he said. “I got outcoached. I didn’t help these guys.”

I guess it’s not just about Jared Goff needing to step up in Detroit, is it?

Then again, maybe it is. The former first-overall pick was dinking and dunking again Sunday, completing 22-of-34 passes for just 222 yards. No touchdowns. No interceptions. No impact. Most importantly, no victory.

“My job is to do my job every day,” Goff said Sunday. “I trust those guys up top, but my job is to do my job on every play and every day—be the best leader I can be, be the best teammate I can be, be the best person I can be, be the best player I can be. At times, I’m going to bear the brunt of a lot of this and that’s my job.”

So, if you’re keeping score, the head coach said he didn’t do his job well, and the quarterback—while not as direct—is admitting he didn’t do his job either. That’s not exactly a winning combination for a franchise that’s in Year 1 of a rebuild. And maybe this is what should be expected after the Lions traded away the one player (Matthew Stafford) who provided stability for an organization that’s been one of the more unstable clubs for decades.

The Lions are entering their BYE week with their tail between their legs. A look ahead at their next four games won’t help their psyche, either, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings on tap. Detroit will be underdogs in all of those contests, and it’s more likely than not that Campbell’s club will be 0-12 when the middle of December rolls around.

The most remarkable stat from Sunday’s loss is that the Eagles only passed for 114 yards. Neither Jalen Hurts nor Gardner Minshew tossed a touchdown. Yet, Detroit still managed to surrender 44 points, including a Philadelphia defensive touchdown. It was a laughable effort by a team that’s become the NFL’s biggest joke in 2021.

Detroit is becoming something of a sad clown. When the season ends and the laughter around these bizarre losses quiets, the harsh reality of the road ahead will hit. The Lions could end up with the first overall pick in a draft year that has no quarterback worthy of that selection. They might have no choice but to bring Goff back for another year and continue torturing their fan base through the 2022 season.

It’s sort of fitting that the Lions played this way on Halloween. They’ve been more trick than treat in 2021, and the horror is showing no sign of ending anytime soon.
