Christian Darrisaw Emerging Into A Star For Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are 4-1 through five games of this NFL season. Entering this season, their top or “blue chip” players were Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Eric Kendricks, Harrison Smith, and possibly Kirk Cousins (don’t yell at me). The one player no one discussed or expected to enter the chat was second-year left tackle Christian Darrisaw.

Darrisaw was selected with the No. 23 pick in the first round as the third offensive tackle of the 2021 draft. His tape in college warranted his draft position and the capital used to select him. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound tackle has the power and movement skills that easily garnered scouts’ attention. The left tackle position is arguably the most coveted on the entire offensive line, so this made Darrisaw a pivotal piece in retooling the Vikings’ front line.

Darrisaw missed most of the offseason his rookie year due to a groin injury and a second procedure to speed up recovery. He was eased into game action before taking over in Week 6 of the 2021 season—he never looked back. Darrisaw allowed 22 pressures, 11 hurries, six QB hits, and five sacks in his 10 starts as a rookie.

That was a solid start to a career, especially considering the circumstances and time missed due to injury. The question then became, could Darrisaw build upon his rookie performance in year two? So far, so good!

The level of play he has put on tape and been impressive. The analytics and film are happily married on this topic. Darrisaw has allowed seven pressures, five hurries, two QB hits, and zero sacks through the first five games of the season. He has been outstanding in pass protection. The ability to handle a variety of rushers and physical archetypes is well on display.

The tweet below showcases his ability to get out of his stance with control to meet the rusher at the top of his rush. He squares him up and pancakes him into the turf.

The next tweet showcases his athleticism to get out in the screen game and hunt down second/third-level defenders with ferocity. Who doesn’t love an athletic offensive lineman that embraces physicality? I sure do!

Look at the redirection skills of Darrisaw here. 300-plus-pound offensive linemen are not expected to move the way Darrisaw does.

The Vikings’ breakout award (if it was a real award), belongs to Darrisaw at this point of the season. As Cousins’ blindside protector, he holds up his end of the bargain to keep his quarterback as clean in the pocket as possible. His power and relentlessness in the run game are a treat to see also. Offensive tackles are not always viewed as “star players” but when you have one you hold them close.

I believe Christian Darrisaw is not only a rising star for the Vikings but a rising star in the league and in his position. His name could be listed among the best in the NFL before we know it. I appreciate his game and want to highlight the rare abilities he possesses. Vikings fans, you have yourself a good one!
