The Chicago Bears’ mission to build the offense around quarterback Justin Fields will take many forms during the 2022 offseason. Offensive linemen and wide receivers will be targeted, both in free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft. How free agency unfolds will determine which position group becomes the priority for Chicago with their first pick, which is currently slated to be No. 39 overall. I recently wrote about North Dakota State wide receiver Christian Watson and his potential fit with the Bears. The 2022 Senior Bowl star has emerged as a legitimate second-round prospect, but he isn’t alone. Chicago will have several intriguing players to consider, including Nevada’s Romeo Doubs. Doubs, who checked in at just under 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds at the Senior Bowl weigh-ins, had a strong showing in Mobile, Alabama. He displayed his twitchy athleticism as a route-runner during the week of practices and was able to defeat some of the nation’s top cornerbacks downfield. https://twitter.com/jacobinfante24/status/1488665830602727431 Doubs’ combination of size and long speed is the type of weapon the Bears’ offense is missing opposite Darnell Mooney, who’s a field-flipper in his own right but doesn’t have the kind of frame to bully defensive backs. Doubs does. https://twitter.com/seniorbowl/status/1488596318578778118 Doubs enjoyed a career year for the Wolfpack in 2021. He finished the season with 80 catches for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns and proved to be one of the top playmakers in the country. He finished the year with eight touchdowns of 20 or more yards. https://twitter.com/NickPenticoff/status/1488965752950771712 Doubs currently has a third-round grade from TDN scout Drae Harris and is ranked 139th in TDN’s 2022 NFL Draft player rankings. Doubs has some work to do to earn a second-round valuation, but if he runs really well (like I suspect he will) at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, the buzz around him as a day-two pick will grow louder. Chicago has two picks on day two: Nos. 39 and 71. Right now, Doubs is a better value with the second of those two picks, but keep a close eye on how he performs at the combine and his pro day; if he knocks it out of the park, he won’t be considered a reach in the top 50 selections. And with how he’d fill the Bears’ need for a big outside playmaker in the passing game, a Fields-to-Doubs combination is a very real possibility.
