Studs & Duds: I Love You, Mike Gundy

Ms. Bonnie Tyler put it best: "...late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need. I need a hero."

Well, stop your search, Bonnie. Coach Mike Gundy is the man for you. He's the man for all of us, a people's champion. Let's not waste any time this week.

STUD - Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy

You see, Gundy's Oklahoma State team was putting their finishing touches on 38-35 upset victory over the Texas Longhorns. It was at that moment when an on-field scrap brought both coaches out onto the field.

Texas Coach Tom Herman (a dud this week...and I'll explain in a moment) was irate, screaming across the field. Coach Gundy? The man calmly turned to his sideline and raises his arms in the air, channeling his inner Maximus.

Gundy's stud status was cemented in the post-game when he proceeded to dump on critics on the Twitter dot com, suggesting the social media landscape was the bane of our society. I don't know about you but it resonated with me.

Listen, I appreciate what Twitter can bring to the table as a source of connectivity with our readers. I also know without social media and one's ability to navigate it successfully, creating a career for oneself in this space is damn near impossible.

I owe a lot to Twitter. But Twitter, like most social media, is the wild west. There's nothing stopping people from saying whatever they'd like to you. I can only imagine what celebrities, pro athletes and others (for example, women, people of color, etc.) are subjected to. Thankfully, I'm just a draftnik. That said, I can set my calendar to the criticisms I receive.

Football season - You don't like a player on my team so you're an idiot

Draft season - You don't work for an NFL team so you're not qualified to scout players

Mock draft season - You gave my team a player I perceive we don't need, do some research

Offseason - Hey man I love your content

All criticisms from here on out will be met with the Coach Gundy "Rats Ass" video. So bless you, Coach Gundy. You are the hero I've been holding out for 'til the end of the night.

DUD - Texas coach Tom Herman

What are you yelling about, Coach?

Herman, by his own admission, thought Gundy was coming onto the field to...have a word with a Texas player? Ah, okay. An honest misunderstanding, it seems. Alls fair in love and war, as they say. But do me a favor and check out the play in question.

Perhaps Gundy should have taken a moment while he was out on the field to talk some sense into Texas DE Breckyn Hager....

DUD - Texas DE Breckyn Hager

...because someone needs to. Hager, lined up outside of a tight end, thinks he's going to reach the quarterback (in shotgun, mind you) on a kneel down at the end of the game?

Let's be real here. Hager isn't exactly a "plus" athlete. You are never, ever going to get home in time to challenge a kneel down off the edge. You want to come with a little thump, just in case things get weird? Okay. Sure. Whatever floats your boat.

But to continue to run your feet on a guy after the whistle has blown? It's dumb. There's no need for it. But at the end of the day, Hager's misplaced ambition (I'm being nice) gave us the golden goose that is Gundy's post-game mood and soundbites.

Speaking of misplaced feelings...

DUD - The 2018 World Series

Gee whiz it sure was great to see Boston and Los Angeles go toe to toe for a World Series (no it wasn't). Commissioner Manfred was "surprised" by the low ratings in the World Series. I'm not. Baseball is a sport with fading interest, why? Because Major League Baseball doesn't allow their product to be interesting.

The best example I can think of is when a video of Terry Collins and umpire Tom Hallion went viral in June when Noah Syndergaard threw behind a Dodgers batter. The video was a compelling discussion between a manager and an umpire about the dynamics of the "gentlemen's rules" of baseball.

It was fun. And it was something we'd never seen before. It had people talking about baseball!

So, of course, the league scrubbed the video from the internet.

Guess what, Commissioner Manfred. You missed one. If you want to watch two minutes and two seconds of more entertainment than you'd find in any of the five World Series games, cheers! (NSFW warning: Collins has some choice words for Hallion.)

This is all I need in life. The UCF Knights will be rocking space themed uniforms this upcoming weekend and I need to know where I can buy a helmet, a jersey, a set of pants, cleats and even the gloves. Don't take my word for it.

#ReachForTheStars, indeed. Bonus points for wrapping in the Citronaut, who was the first mascot of the team wayyyyy back when they were Florida Technical University. UCF has a much better ring to it.

Wearing these, the Knights are guaranteed to stay undefeated. I'd even venture to say they are...light years ahead of the competition.

I'll see myself out.
