As the rest of the college football world seemed to take the week off (cough, cough, the SEC), the Big 12 was busy sorting out its potential championship game.
There were four teams in contention for a Big 12 title shot entering Saturday's slate: Oklahoma, West Virginia, Texas and Iowa State. Now it's down to three, with two teams on the fast track, and one clinging to hope more than realistic odds.
Let's recap what was a standings-shaking weekend in the Big 12.
West Virginia On Life Support
It wasn't very long ago at all that we were bragging about the signature win of WVU quarterback Will Grier after they won in thrilling fashion over Texas. However, as timing would have it, this week they ran into an angry and focused Oklahoma State team that was looking for revenge after a 1-point loss to Oklahoma the week prior.
Despite Grier throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, West Virginia couldn't keep their shotgun seat for the Big 12 title game, and their College Football Playoff chance, as they fell to OSU by a score of 45-41.
For the Cowboys, their offensive stars came to shine. Quarterback Taylor Cornelius threw for 338 yards and five passing touchdowns, and also had over 100 rushing yards with a rushing touchdown. His main man on the receiving end was once again the sensational sophomore wide receiver Tylan Wallace, who got two more touchdowns on Saturday.
West Virginia must now beat Oklahoma next week to stay in conference title contention. If they can't beat Oklahoma, they'll have to rely on an unlikely hero to help them out...
Texas Back On Track
After losing a heartbreaker at home to West Virginia, Texas had to win out and have some help on their side for a chance at the Big 12 title.
Well, they got that help.
West Virginia falling to Oklahoma State meant that a win for the Longhorns over Iowa State paved an easy road to the title game.
They got that win 24-10.
The Cyclones were shorthanded for this one, as running back David Montgomery missed the first half for being ejected last week for throwing a punch in the Baylor game. It wasn't a big offensive output for Texas, but quarterback Sam Elhinger did what he needed to do to get the win, including hooking up with wide receiver Lil Jordan Humphrey, as shown above.
All Texas has to do now is beat Kansas next week and they'll get their big rematch...
Oklahoma Holds All The Cards
After a 55-40 thrashing of the Kansas Jayhawks this week, the 10-1 Oklahoma Sooners will not not only be in the Big 12 title game, but depending on how they do next week, they'll get to choose their opponent, too.
Heisman Trophy candidate and Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 272 yards, ran for 99 and finished with five total touchdowns (two passing, three rushing). he also gave us what was the "play of the day" on a 75-yard run. Freshman running back Kennedy Brooks had 171 rushing yards for the Sooners, and the rest of the crew made it an easy ride for a win.
Next week Oklahoma takes on West Virginia in a game that could decide it all. With a win over Texas, West Virginia could clinch a spot in the conference title game with a win. If they lose, all Texas has to do is beat Kansas and they will be in over WVU.
Will we get the Red River Rivalry of Oklahoma versus Texas part 2? Or will Will Grier get his chance to be a conference champion?
