Gabe Jacas Scouting Report
Gabe Jacas has proven that he is a productive rusher who wins with speed and athleticism on the perimeter to consistently get sacks or QB pressures.
Draft Grade: Round 3 - Adequate Starter
Strengths:
Athleticism/Fluid Movement: On film, the first trait that stands out is Jacas’s athleticism. He shows good straight-line speed and a quick first step that allows him to consistently pressure the quarterback. Beyond that, Jacas displays strong reactionary athleticism, with the ability to plant, redirect, and adjust his angle to close on the ball carrier or quarterback. His fluidity allows him to stay balanced while changing directions, which enhances his overall effectiveness as a defender.
Ideal 3-4 OLB Profile: Jacas’ measurables and athletic profile project cleanly to a 3-4 outside linebacker role at the NFL level. He has the burst and bend to rush the passer off the edge, while also possessing the movement skills to drop into coverage. Jacas is comfortable playing in space and can execute hook, curl, and flat responsibilities effectively, making him a versatile option in a multiple-front defense.
Pass-Rush Production: Over the past two seasons, Jacas has produced 19 sacks and six forced fumbles, highlighting his natural feel for getting to the quarterback. He consistently wins with a quick first step and the ability to accelerate around the corner, using speed to stress offensive tackles. Jacas shows an effective ghost move to slip under an offensive tackle’s pads, as well as a dip-and-rip to turn the corner. When facing more athletic tackles who beat him to the spot, he demonstrates the fluidity and awareness to redirect across the tackle’s face and attack the inside counter lane to the quarterback.
Concerns:
Run Defense at LOS: At times, Jacas struggles to consistently hold the point of attack against offensive tackles and can be displaced off the line of scrimmage. He is also inconsistent when it comes to shedding blocks in the run game, and once an offensive tackle can latch on, Jacas can have difficulty freeing himself to make a play on the ball carrier. Improving his upper-body strength and refining his hand usage and block-shedding technique would help him become a more reliable run defender at the next level.
Run Defense Awareness: Jacas’ run-defense awareness and technique still need refinement. When facing pulling offensive linemen attempting to execute kick-out blocks, Jacas will occasionally lose gap integrity, which can open up running lanes for the ball carrier. Becoming more disciplined with his run fits and improving his recognition of blocking schemes will be important steps toward becoming a more complete edge defender.
