Jam Miller Scouting Report
Jam Miller is a well-rounded back who has good vision and instincts as a runner. He can be a reliable part of a running back rotation.
Draft Grade: Round 6 - Role Specific Contributor
Strengths:
Vision: Miller does a good job of reading the run design from frontside to backside and finding holes in the defensive front. He also anticipates which gaps defenders are going to attack and will press one hole with the intention of jump-cutting to another.
Lateral Cuts/Agility: On film, Miller’s vision and footwork appear to be well synchronized. When he identifies a vacant hole, he can execute lateral cuts or jump cuts to reach it. Miller has the agility to string together consecutive jump cuts to maneuver through condensed spaces between the tackles.
Good Pad Level: Miller runs with a low pad level, which helps him avoid taking big hits from defenders. It also enhances his contact balance, allowing him to bounce off tackles and maintain balance to pick up extra yardage.
Concerns:
Lacks Elite Top-End Speed: Miller appears to lack elite top-end speed, which shows up in his ability to separate from defenders. On multiple occasions, defenders can catch him from behind, preventing plays from turning into bigger gains. His lack of speed also limits his ability to outrun pursuit angles.
Pass-Catching Impact: Throughout his career, Miller has had limited impact as a pass catcher out of the backfield. This could limit his value as a versatile option on third downs for NFL teams.
Open-Field Elusiveness: In the open field, Miller appears to struggle with consistently making defenders miss in one-on-one situations. Whether due to top-end quickness or hip fluidity, Miller is more of a straight-line runner and does not consistently cover ground laterally to evade defenders.
