Chiefs Hope 'Bad Day' Remains Isolated Incident

“It was a bad day to have a bad day.”

That was Andy Reid’s response about the Super Bowl loss at the beginning of February, and he mentioned the coaches didn’t coach very well on top of players not playing well. While the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was reminiscent of how the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, this was more at the hands of the Chiefs than five years ago. Brett Veach was adamant after that loss that they would never let that happen again, referring to Patrick Mahomes running for his life behind a makeshift offensive line.

Four short years later, it happened again, and now the Chiefs have to find a way forward to solidify the left tackle position and address a potential roster hole in guard Trey Smith. One silver lining to that story: the Chiefs’ front office was pleasantly surprised to see the elevated cap number for the 2025 season. This will give them more optimism about retaining Smith and helping maintain continuity along the interior. However, Reid was more non-committal with the left tackle position, saying “We’re keeping everything wide open. It’s too early right now.”

With the offensive line still a concern, Brett Veach gave positive updates on the potential return of two weapons for Patrick Mahomes in Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown. On Brown, Veach said they are optimistic about signing him back, and his talks with his agency and those around him have all been positive. With Kelce, Veach stated that he has never had a deadline and is fired up to return. He hopes Kelce can have a magical end for a magical career; it sounds like Veach is expecting one more year from the future Hall-of-Famer and wants to send him out on top.

Turning their attention to the draft, Andy Reid and Brett Veach mentioned that they believe the 2025 class is loaded on the defensive side, specifically the defensive line. Veach mentioned the defensive trenches multiple times, and running back is perhaps the most talented and deepest offensive position in the draft. That’s great news for Chiefs fans, as the team needs to fill out its interior defensive line and still look for an impact EDGE rusher if Charles Omenihu does not return. The Chiefs watched as a team that built through the trenches in Philadelphia tore through their offensive line and kept Jalen Hurts clean on the opposite side with a plan in place and depth to execute. While Andy Reid mentioned that the loss hurts for a few days, and you move on, Veach pointed to the loss and said, “Like everything in life, you learn from your losses.”

This offseason and draft class will go a long way to showing how the Chiefs have learned from the two Super Bowl losses and the ability to set themselves up to continue the run they’ve been on. What should be the Chiefs’ No. 1 priority on the 2025 draft?
