Film Analysis:

Shemar Stewart is a former five-star prospect who left the South Florida area to attend Texas A&M as part of an elite recruiting class that also included Walter Nolen and LT Overton. Since enrolling as a freshman, Stewart has been a consistent contributor at Texas A&M. The 2024 season marked his first full year in a starting role, and it was his most productive season to date.

At Texas A&M, Stewart was a versatile defender, capable of aligning anywhere along the line of scrimmage and providing valuable reps in both the run game and as a pass rusher. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 290 pounds, Stewart combines size, athleticism, length, and quickness to present a challenging blocking assignment for most offensive linemen.

As a run defender, Stewart has demonstrated positional flexibility, aligning anywhere from head-up over the guard to standing up or placing his hand in the dirt as an edge rusher on the perimeter. On the interior, Stewart displays a quick first step at the snap, allowing him to generate powerful collisions with offensive linemen when he combines his quickness with his strength. He is also adept at penetrating gaps, disrupting backfields, and creating opportunities to make tackles.

One of Stewart's most impressive traits is his closing speed and open-field acceleration. He can effectively pursue ball-carriers from the backside of a running play or track them down near the sideline. Stewart sets a hard edge when aligned on the edge, forcing runs back inside and preventing ball carriers from breaking outside, which helps funnel plays to the defense's support.

As a pass rusher, Stewart has tremendous upside due to his length, quickness, and overall athleticism. His explosive first step at the snap often gives him an advantage, allowing him to beat offensive linemen around the arc. At the top of the arc, Stewart shows good bend for a player of his height, enabling him to turn the corner and pressure the quarterback.

Stewart’s length is another asset, as it allows him to disrupt quarterbacks even when he doesn’t make direct contact. His extended arms can distract quarterbacks, force hurried decisions, and create movement within the pocket. He also excels on twists and stunts, where his ability to plant, redirect, and change direction is on full display. Stewart’s massive frame and athleticism make him a challenging assignment for offensive linemen, requiring them to counter both his strength and agility to prevent him from reaching the quarterback.

Despite his physical gifts, Stewart's primary concern as a player is his lack of overall production. Over his three-year collegiate career, he has totaled just 4.5 sacks. This lack of production appears to stem from an underdeveloped pass-rushing plan. His projection to the NFL relies heavily on a team recognizing his raw physical tools and dedicating time to refining his technique, strategy, and consistency as a pass rusher.

Overall, Stewart is a rare athlete with an exceptional combination of size and athleticism. With proper coaching and development, he has the potential to transform into a premier pass rusher at the NFL level. His physical tools provide a solid foundation, and his ceiling is among the highest of players entering the league.
