Film Analysis:
A seven-year contributor at the college level, Tyler Shough made three stops in his collegiate career before entering his name in the 2025 NFL Draft. A former top-100 high school recruit in the class of 2018, Shough’s age will knock him down boards, but his maturity and experience will also hold weight for teams in need of a fresh face in a QB room.
With experience in three different offensive architectures, Shough is a primary pocket passer who has seen it all at the college level. He has experience working primarily out of shotgun but also does a nice job feeding different levels when asked to work under center either in straight dropback scenarios or in play-action. Smooth mechanics with a quick delivery and good zip to all levels. Shough does have more juice stored in his frame should he begin to drive through his lower half and work consistently downhill with his throws. He has nice touch up the seam and has shown the ability to make throws under duress. Quick to ID and target one-on-one opportunities with a deep ball that will play at the next level—the ball has nice carry with multiple instances of Shough placing in a spot only his guy can get it. Standing tall with a solid base allows him to consistently make throws in small windows.
He does well to tempo velocity in the shallow to intermediate areas, but the ball can lose air at times on arrival and die at the feet of wideouts. The inconsistencies in his lower half showcase in those instances where he tends to fade to his backfoot and attempt to push throws downfield with just his arm. He can, at times, turn into a one-read QB, but does a fine job of scanning both pre and post-snap to identify advantageous matchups.
Off-platform, Shough has a few excellent throws that make you rewind and play it back a few times. Excellent when throwing off-platform to either side. He made two throws (vs. Notre Dame and Virginia) that would be considered elite at any level—sprinting to his left, flipping his hips, and dropping a pass into the bucket against varying throwing windows at a 3 o’clock arm angle.
Shough will make a living as a pocket passer, but his mobility remains highly underrated (front flip TD run vs Clemson). In rhythm, Shough has showcased the ability to take care of the football and move the sticks, only to find a soft spot and drive a throw 35 yards into the bucket.
Away from concerns about his age, where Shough’s player development phase is completed, he has traits that many teams look for in a potential contributor at the NFL level, should the surroundings correlate to what he does best.
